We find out if Stranger Things is based on a book, find out what inspired The Duffer Brothers to make the show, and take a look at Season 5 details.
Stranger Things was made by The Duffer Brothers for Netflix and debuted in 2016. It stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Natalia Dyer, and many more in a story set in the town of Hawkings, Indiana in the 1980s, where the disappearance of a boy sets off a series of supernatural events.
IS STRANGER THINGS LOOSELY BASED ON A BOOK?
No, Stranger Things is not based on a book, but The Duffer Brothers did get ideas from real-life events.
The Duffer Brothers were also influenced by the real events of Project MKUltra, which was run by the CIA from the 1950s to the 1970s and tried to control people’s minds more.
Also, My Imperfect Life said that Eddie Munson was loosely based on Damien Echols, who was one of the West Memphis Three who killed three eight-year-old children.
The Duffer Brothers also got ideas from the true-crime documentaries Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and The Montauk Project.
WHAT IS THE MONATUK PROJECT?
In The Montauk Project, there is a story about a supposed military program that did paranormal experiments on civilians, like controlling their minds or sending them back in time.
Preston Nicols, who says he was one of the project’s “survivors,” wrote a book about his time there in 1992. In it, he said that the patients developed psychic powers and talked to aliens.
Gaten Matarazzo also told Wired that Stranger Things was based on Montauk’s Camp Hero, where these experiments were supposed to take place, and that the series was sold to Netflix under the working title Montauk.
