Salesforce, a top cloud-based software-as-a-service company, told its employees at the end of August that they could work from home until at least July 31. Brent Hyder, the president, and chief people officer of Salesforce, explained the company’s decision in a blog post at the time. He said,
“We know that moving our offices to our homes isn’t always easy or comfortable, especially for those who have families at home or who are feeling lonely. “We’re working hard to meet the unique needs of our employees during this time.” Hyder also said, “To make sure our employees have everything they need to keep working from home, we’re giving them an extra $250 for office tools and equipment on top of the $250 we gave them earlier this year.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, Salesforce announced on Tuesday that its employees will be able to work “remotely, part-time, or full-time” after the pandemic and that the company will reduce its “real-estate footprint” as a result. The Wall Street Journal also said, “Salesforce expects that in the future, more than 65% of its employees will only come to work one to three days a week, which is up from 40% before the pandemic.”
Hyder wrote in a company blog post, “As we move into a new year, we must continue to move forward with agility, creativity, and a beginner’s mind. This includes how we build our culture. Is no longer an immersive workspace just a desk in one of our towers. “The 9-to-5 workday is dead.”
Salesforce said it will implement the following policies and give employees “flexibility in how, when, and where they work with three ways of working” based on feedback from employees:
Flexibility: Employees around the world will work flexibly when it’s safe to go back to the office. This means that they will be in the office one to three days a week to work with the team, meet with customers, and give presentations.
Fully remote: Employees who don’t live near an office or whose jobs don’t need one can work from home full-time.
Office-based: Few people will work from an office four or five days a week if their jobs require it.
This move is similar to what Amazon and other forward-thinking tech companies have done recently. The big online store just announced that it is starting to build a second headquarters in Northern Virginia. When people come back to work, they will have a lot of options for where to stay. The project is a huge mixed-use office and retail complex worth $2.5 billion. It will have three 22-story office and retail buildings that could house about 25,000 workers. As part of the outdoor theme, there will be woods, a theatre, walking paths, a lot of bike parking, and a dog run.
Amazon thinks that some people will want to come into the office from time to time so that it can spread its bets. Spaces for workers to work together are being planned. Inside the office, there will be plants and perks, like a program for artists to live there for a while.
Facebook bought the beautiful, brand-new, and unused 400,000-square-foot corporate campus headquarters from outdoor gear store REI. This went against the current trend of companies letting employees work from home. The spectacular complex has a design and function that take the environment and nature into account. It also has an office space that fits with its brand of an outdoor lifestyle. It has stairs that lead outside, a bridge, a courtyard, and skylights so workers can see the sky.
Alphabet, the company that owns Google, said in September that it wants to build a huge company town in Mountain View, California. The tech giant will build a 40-acre campus with homes, retail stores, parks and recreation areas, and a business center. Google’s plan, called the “Middlefield Park Master Plan,” is an updated version of the company town. It includes about 1.33 million square feet of office space, residential housing, open-air recreation space, commercial buildings, retail shops, and a lot of other amenities. The campus will be owned by the company that runs the search engine.
After the pandemic, these decisions made by top tech companies show the new direction of the business in the United States. It shows that companies are spending a lot of money building or buying real estate because they think the new way of working will be a mix of being in an office a few days a week and working from home the rest of the time.
