Riders in Austin, Texas can now use the Lyft app to choose a car that drives itself to get around the city.This is the first time a commercial autonomous service is available in Austin, Texas. It is also the third city where Lyft riders can call for an autonomous ride, joining Miami, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Most people’s first time in an autonomous car will be with a ride-hailing service like Lyft. This new ride mode looks the same to people in Austin as any other Lyft ride. Riders can call a self-driving Ford car powered by Argo AI technology right from the Lyft app for the same price as a regular Lyft ride.

Riders will be able to drive themselves without help from a driver. When their car arrives, the rider can use the Lyft app to unlock the doors, start the ride, and even get in touch with customer service.

Lyft is getting ready for a “fully autonomous future,” so for now, riders will also be accompanied by two safety operators.
Lyft is going beyond ridesharing by offering a full range of transportation options, such as self-driving cars.

With today’s launch, Lyft says it is the only company that runs a commercial autonomous vehicle rideshare service in three North American cities. It also says it is looking forward to bringing more autonomous vehicle rides to more cities in the near future.
