Have you heard that Japan wants to pay for half the cost of your trip? I’m sorry, but it’s not going to happen. The Japan Tourism Agency quickly debunked rumors that its new “Go To Travel” campaign would cover half of the tourists’ travel expenses.
The goal of the campaign is to get more people to travel within Japan after the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes Japanese tourists who travel within their own country.
In a series of tweets in both Japanese and English, the country’s tourism agency responded to a news story that said the program would pay for half of travelers’ costs.
Hiroshi Tabata, the head of Japan’s tourism agency, was quoted in the news last week as saying that they planned to start the Go To Travel campaign as soon as COVID-19 was under control, which would be no earlier than July.
According to a budget document released by Japan’s economy ministry, the proposed plan would give out travel vouchers for lodging and food, up to a maximum of 20,000 yen per person, per stay. That’s the same as $185 per person in the United States.
At the moment, this means that projects like this will only be for people who live in Japan and not for people who come from other countries. A spokesperson for the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in London told the UK’s Independent newspaper that help would be given to cover some of the costs of domestic travel.
The original statement was quickly changed to make it clear that the proposed campaign would only cover a portion of domestic travel costs, but it was too late to stop the story from going viral.
Many places around the world, including the UK’s Mirror, India’s News18, and many lifestyle sites and blogs in the US, had already picked up the story without waiting for the correction, which caused confusion. Sorry, travelers. always seemed too good to be true.
