How do you curl?
Curling is a sport that was first played in Scotland in the 1600s. In the beginning, it was played on frozen canals, lochs, and ponds with stones that could curl. Over time, changes were made, like using a standard stone that weighed between 38 and 44 pounds and moving to indoor facilities.
Curling has been an Olympic sport for how long?
Men’s curling became an Olympic sport at the 1924 games, but it wasn’t until the 1998 games that both men’s and women’s curling were added. In 2018, the mixed doubles event was added.
How does curling work?
Curling is a team sport where two groups of four people take turns sliding stones across a sheet of ice toward a goal called a “house.” Each player throws two stones per round, which is called a “end.” Other players can change the path of a stone by sweeping the ice in front of it.
Each team’s goal is to get their stones as close as possible to the middle of the house and earn points based on where their stones are. In each end, only one team can score, and points are only given when the stones touch the house. After 10 ends, the winner is the team with the most points.
In mixed doubles, there is only one man and one woman on each team. Each end has five throws, and each game is made up of eight ends.

When players sweep the ice, they get rid of debris, reduce friction, and let stones travel farther. They can also make the path of the stone straighter as it gets closer to the house.
The curlers are not bad-mouthing their opponents when they yell. The player who slides the stone is about 150 feet from the house, so it’s important for that player and the rest of the team to talk to each other. “Hurry” means “sweep as fast as you can” and “Whoa” means “stop” (stop sweeping).
What does curling look like at the Olympics?
In the Olympics, there are tournaments for men, women, and mixed doubles. Each event will have 10 countries taking part. Ten teams play a round-robin tournament in the first round, and the top four teams move on to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals then play for the gold and silver medals, while the losers play for the bronze medal.
