Meta is going after Apple’s iMessage in a new ad that makes the competition between the two companies even worse.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, posted a picture of an ad in New York’s Penn Station on Monday. The ad says that Meta’s WhatsApp is safer and more private than Apple’s iMessage and regular text messages.
Zuckerberg wrote on Instagram, “WhatsApp is much more private and safe than iMessage because it uses end-to-end encryption that works on both iPhones and Android and even in group chats.”
End-to-end encryption means that the messaging system is set up so that the service provider can’t see what’s in the texts and can’t give them out if asked by the law. Both iMessage and WhatsApp use encryption. But messages and backups of devices on either service might be stored in a way that the company can access them. Cellular phone companies store SMS messages.

Zuckerberg said that WhatsApp added encrypted backups last year. He also talked about a feature that lets people use WhatsApp to set new messages to delete themselves automatically.
Zuckerberg wrote in his post, “All of which iMessage still doesn’t have.” In a comment, he said that the company is working on full encryption for Instagram messages.
Meta has thought of Apple as a competitor for a long time, even before Facebook, which is owned by Apple, started making computer hardware like VR headsets. In a 2018 earnings call, Zuckerberg said, “iMessage is by far our biggest competitor.”
The Meta ads came after Google’s own campaign, which took aim at iMessage’s blue bubbles over the summer. Google wants Apple to use RCS, which is the next generation of text messaging. RCS replaces SMS messages with new features and better security, and Google wants Apple to use it.
iMessage from Apple can be used on iPhones, Macs, and iPads. Users who often text with Android users say that getting SMS messages in “green bubbles” on iPhones is a bad way to text.
Cook was asked at a conference in September if Apple might adopt RCS. The person who asked the question said that SMS didn’t allow him to send videos to his mom.
Cook said that Apple’s customers hadn’t asked for any changes and that the best way to fix the problem was to buy an iPhone.
Cook told him, “Get your mom an iPhone.
